Where are you on your S-Curve

Recently, I read an article on the application of the S-Curve to talent development, succession planning and team configuration (Ref. HBR).

In Summary, the S Curve is divided into 3 phases of growth

1. Launch point – When the growth is slow and effortful

2. Sweet spot – When the growth is rapid as people acquire new skills and overcome setbacks

3. Peak (Mastery) – When the work becomes easier, but the curve flattens because there is little left to learn

I attempted to identify the S Curves applicable to my personal and professional learnings and came up with my own portfolio of broader S Curves (not exhaustive).

My career started as a software developer…. after the initial struggle (of learning COBOL/CICS) I was gliding on a path experiencing steep growth (Curve 1).

Soon, MBA happened and I found myself in the consulting industry (Curve 2) …enjoyed working with some really smart people…. great learning opportunities…and above all, met my wife.

Just when I was getting comfortable with consulting, took the decision to start my own firm last year and now (with one eye on my reserves) experiencing the travails of an entrepreneurial life (Curve 3).

Personally, music (I play the guitar) has been my passion for a long time (Curve 4) …finally managed to compose my first short tune (link in the comments section).

Unlike a lot of my friends, I was into cooking (Curve 5) even before the lockdown…pretty confident of serving a 3-course meal to willing guests without having to worry about calling for medical assistance (just in case…😊)

Writing (Curve 6) was on my mind for a long time…recently started blogging and writing articles about subjects that interest me…lets see how it goes.

Reflecting on the S-Curves, I feel I have become a jack of some trades…hoping to master at least one.

Try identifying your portfolio of S Curves…it will really make you introspect.
